The Rafael del Pino Foundation hosted the debate "Poland and Spain: past and present. Europe as seen from Madrid and Warsaw", organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between Spain and that country. It involved Aleksander KwaśniewskiFormer President of the Republic of Poland; Marcelino Oreja AguirreFormer Spanish Foreign Minister of Spain; and Adam MichnikEditor-in-Chief of the newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza.

The debate, which was moderated by Charles PowellDeputy Director of the Elcano Royal Institute, examined the experiences of both countries in their transition to democracy, the process of integration into the European Union and the Atlantic institutions, and the future of their role in Europe and the world.
