Summary:

On 25 February, Mario Alonso Puig gave a keynote lecture at the Rafael del Pino Foundation on the occasion of the presentation of his latest book: El guardián de la verdad y la tercera puerta del tiempo (The Guardian of Truth and the Third Gate of Time). In this novel, the author proposes that we should be like Ulysses and undertake a long journey back to Ithaca to help us overcome our own limitations. Dr. Mario Alonso Puig, a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, asks us never to lose the capacity to surprise ourselves, to leave room for it because that capacity is within us. If our dreams are big, he says, we will live in a big world. That is why we must not give up in the face of difficult times. We all have problems in our lives that can lead us to despair, but we can overcome them. And we can do so precisely because the human brain is only really active when we push it to its limits. That's when creativity comes in to find solutions, to get out of the rut and move on. We have to trust that we can get to that point because creativity is part of ourselves. Precisely for this reason, we must not stop fighting for what really matters to us. Those who have willpower always end up finding a way, a way out, because, in reality, all that wall of limitations that prevents us from acting is generated by our own mind. Each person has different personalities. If we are able to bring them all together, says Mario Alonso Puig, we will have incredible strength. Challenges will not disappear from our lives, because we will always have them, but we will be able to overcome them and become the heroes of our own story, because we all have extraordinary talents within us. We just have to know how to reach them. To do this we must be aware that if we feel powerless in the face of a problem, it is because the mind is playing dirty tricks on us. If we realise this, then the problem is no longer insurmountable. We must also realise that the mind is not all that we are. If something really matters to us, we have to begin to transcend our mind, to overcome those limitations it imposes on us. To do this, we must know ourselves in depth, look at ourselves in the mirror without fear, because the core of the human being is beautiful, is beautiful. But we must also penetrate into the unknown, to be able to overcome doubts and face fears.
