The Rafael del Pino Foundation hosted the opening lecture of the cycle "Lessons from the crisis", delivered by Enrique V. Iglesias, Ibero-American Secretary General, on 26 January 2010.
Enrique V. Iglesias stated that "We are emerging from the crisis, yes, but with several concerns; if the stimuli to the economy are withdrawn, there may be more falls in the labour and real estate markets; the toxins in the financial system must be cleaned up; the recovery in production is not accompanied by a recovery in employment... These are elements that make us think that the reaction is positive, but we cannot say that the crisis has been overcome".
With regard to the international scene, Enrique V. Iglesias highlighted the following aspects: "The unipolar world is over. No country can solve the world's economic problems. We are all going to depend, we already depend, a little bit on each other. In a way, there is a new order that shows that no country can solve the situation that has been created on its own. There is also a loss of Western influence in political, economic and military matters. Europe has to share the future with the emerging powers, especially China. And there is also a loss of the relative prestige of the market. I am not saying that it will disappear, but I think it will have to share the stage with state interventions at all levels, a state with a cautious but important presence, and in an intelligent relationship with the market.
Enrique V. Iglesias inaugurated the series of conferences "Lessons from the crisis", which the Rafael del Pino Foundation held throughout 2010. Participants in the series included Michel Camdessus, Finn E. Kydland, Stefan Ingves, Julio María Sanguinetti, Subi Rangan, Andreu Mas-Colell, Makoto Utsumi, Dani Rodrik, Robert Barro, Juergen B. Donges, Moisés Naím and Luis Garicano. Donges, Moisés Naím and Luis Garicano.
