The way out of the crisis

The Rafael del Pino Foundation hosted the Master Lecture by José Luís Feito entitled "The way out of the crisis", within the series of Master Lectures "What will our societies be like after the crisis?", on 11 November 2009.

José Luis Feito stated that "To get out of the crisis, we have to make tough reforms, which have short-term political costs, which are not always well understood by society as a whole and which politicians' hands tremble when adopting. [...] Without these measures, Spanish society will not emerge from the crisis, [...] it will not create enough jobs in the coming years to substantially reduce unemployment. If these measures are not adopted, [...] we are condemned to live a very long period with very high unemployment rates".

Regarding the influence of the international environment, José Luis Feito said that "In the world economy, policies are being made that will allow for a recovery in the course of the coming months, and perhaps even stronger in the course of 2011. No doubt about it. And that recovery will serve to pull the Spanish economy and, in due course, it will reach positive growth rates. However, I do not believe that the pull of the world economy will be enough, far from it, to ensure that if the reforms I mentioned earlier are not carried out, we will be able to reduce the unemployment rate and ultimately increase the level of employment, as, in short, Spanish society is demanding".
