The Rafael del Pino Foundation is organising a discussion between Michael Ignatieff and Francisco Beltrán on 16 September at 7.00 pm.

Michael Ignatieff He is a Canadian historian, writer, academic and former politician. He holds a PhD in History from Harvard University and has enjoyed a distinguished academic career at some of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions, including Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford and the University of Toronto. Throughout his career, he has combined research and teaching with an active role as a journalist, essayist and public figure. Regarded as one of the most influential voices in contemporary liberal thought, his work addresses issues such as human rights, democracy, nationalism, identity, globalisation and the ethical and political challenges facing modern societies. His reflections have made a significant contribution to the international debate on the protection of individual rights, coexistence in diverse societies and the defence of democratic values in the face of polarisation and extremism. The author of numerous essays, novels and articles, his most notable works include Human rights as policy and idolatry, The lesser of two evils, Everyday virtues y In search of comfort. In addition to his academic and literary work, he had a distinguished political career in Canada as leader of the Liberal Party and leader of the parliamentary opposition. In 2024, he was awarded the Princess of Asturias Prize for Social Sciences, in recognition of a career characterised by his defence of human rights, freedom and democratic values.

Francisco Beltrán He is the Director of REMCO. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Valencia and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the UNED, a postgraduate qualification in Economics from the London School of Economics, a Master’s degree in Governance from the Autonomous University of Madrid, and a PhD in Political Science, also from the UAM. He is a Professor of Political Science at IE University, the Autonomous University of Madrid, and New York University Madrid. He was a Professor of Comparative Politics at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy and in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto between 2013 and 2021. Previously, he was a Visiting Lecturer at Lund University, a Research Fellow at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB), and a Visiting Lecturer at the Munk School of Global Affairs, Research Fellow at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and a lecturer at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya.
