Spanish macroeconomics today

This space includes information on the evolution of a set of relevant macroeconomic variables of the Spanish economy. Databases on the Spanish economy are included. BDREMS y BDMACRO.

The main difference between the two is their periodicity: quarterly for the BDREMS and annually for the BDMACRO. In addition, the BDMACRO is longer. This means that the BDREMS is suitable for works for which the statistical properties of macroeconomic variables, especially their cyclical regularities, are relevant. On the other hand, the BDMACRO is more suitable for the analysis of the long-term evolution of the economy and, also, for empirical studies for which economic fluctuations with a frequency of less than one year are not relevant.

Technical information:

These series, as well as contributing to improving knowledge about the Spanish economy, constitute the statistical basis for the elaboration of macroeconomic models, such as the models REMS y EREMSThe result of the research project "Macroeconomic modelling and public policy"supported from the outset by the Rafael del Pino Foundation. This research project, led by the researchers Javier Ferri, José Emilio Boscá and José Ramón García, joined, in 2012, BBVA Research.

BDREMS: base of data on the Spanish economy

The series of quarterly observations of these variables have been elaborated by researchers from the University of Valencia and of the State Secretaries for the Budget and the Economy of the Government of Spain. The variables included in the Spanish macroeconomics database (BDREMS), are classified into five groups:

  1. Demand and output variables and their corresponding deflators. Source: Quarterly National Accounts, INE. Base year: 2010.
  2. Demographic and labour market variables. Source: Quarterly National Accounts, INE.
  3. Public sector variables. Source: IGAE.
  4. Monetary and financial variables. Source: Bank of Spain.
  5. External sector variables. Banco de España.

With the aim of contributing to the knowledge of the behaviour of our economy in recent decades, in this space we offer a visualisation tool of the most relevant macroeconomic series, which includes observations from 1980 to the present day.

BDMACRO: base of data on the Spanish economy

The BDMACRO database is annual and comprises linked series for the period 1954-2022 of the macroeconomic magnitudes of the Spanish economy, in terms of national accounts and with base year 2015. As is known, the INE's national accounts series begin in 1964. However, the Instituto de Estudios Fiscales (IEF) published national accounts data from 1954. This database incorporates the data that were published at the time, covering 230 macroeconomic variables. In this way, the distinctive feature of the BDMACRO is to provide the user with long series for the study of the Spanish economy which, in the particular case of Economic History, complement works such as that of Leandro Prados de la Escosura.

AMECO

The Budget Directorate General of the Ministry of Finance provides the European Commission's AMECO database in spreadsheet format for the sole purpose of putting the contents of the AMECO database into a more manageable format, but without altering either the content or the organisation of the original database. The Commission updates the AMECO database biannually, in the spring and autumn of each year.
