The last few decades have witnessed an important process of change, both social and economic, towards what has come to be known as the Information Society or the Knowledge Society. In the configuration of this new socio-economic environment, various phenomena have come together: the globalisation of economic activity; the advances of the technological revolution, in which information and communication technologies play a fundamental role; the progressive increase in the importance of the services sector in the economy, as well as its repercussions on the creation of wealth and employment in the different countries; and the important transformation produced in the labour markets, based on the appearance of a new type of workers, who could be called "knowledge workers" or "intellectuals", and who are becoming one of the critical factors of business success at the present time.
