Emilio Bouza Santiago

He has been Head of the Department of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón and Professor of the Faculty of Medicine at the Complutense University of Madrid until his retirement in September 2017. He has been the introducer of modern Infectious Diseases in Spain and Founder of the Spanish Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. He founded the Infectious Diseases Unit in the Microbiology Service of the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in 1977 and in 1984 he obtained the position of Head Professor of the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Service of the Gregorio Marañón Hospital, a newly created service at that time. This multidisciplinary unit is today an example of the way it works in its approach to Infectious Pathology.

The Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Service of the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón is now in its 38th year of existence and during this time it has had a very intense teaching activity, being the centre where a very important part of all those who today practice in different clinical or laboratory areas in Infectious Pathology in Spain and Latin America have been trained. The group is a reference centre for international visitors from all over the world and has been nominated as an ESCMID "Observatory Centre". Under the direction of Professor Bouza, more than 60 doctoral theses have been completed to date. Professor Bouza has been in charge of several subjects at the Faculty of Medicine, an activity he continues to carry out at the present time.

Scientifically. the Microbiology and Infectious E. Infectious Diseases of the Gregorio Marañón Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense University is in objective parameters one of the most recognised in the world. It is the first group in scientific production of the entire Complutense University of Madrid and Professor Bouza is personally the author of more than 800 publications, with a Hirsch index of 70. All scientific production has always followed the foundation of patient service and the translational idea.

Professor Bouza has consecutively edited the Journal of the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (EIMC), the Spanish Clinical Journal and the Journal Clinical Microbiology and Infection (CMI) of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID). He has been President of the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC) and Secretary General of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID). He has received the medal of Galicia for his contribution to the introduction of modern infectious diseases in Spain and the ESCMID Award for a lifetime dedicated to Infectious Pathology in 2012.

At the present time, he maintains his lines of research and his full teaching activity. In his position as emeritus assistant, he continues to offer daily support to the professionals of his former department and to maintain continuous training activities with different hospital departments.
