In 2003, the Rafael del Pino Foundation decided to award a Rafael del Pino Chair to Mauro Federico Guillén Rodríguez, Professor of International Business Management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. The research took place mainly at the University of Pennsylvania (USA). In accordance with the agreement signed on 13 June 2003, the objective of the Chair was for Professor Guillén to carry out research under the title "The Spanish Multinational Company: Economic and Organisational Characteristics".

Professor Guillén completed the research in the summer of 2004 and it was published in 2005 by Cambridge University Press under the title The Rise of the Spanish Multinational Firm. European Business in the Global Economy. In his work, Professor M. Guillén analyses the causes and consequences of Spanish investment abroad. The analysis is based on numerous sources of information: some 110 interviews with businessmen, managers, politicians, diplomats, experts and journalists; several public opinion polls; data on Spanish companies and their international activities; confidential reports and all sorts of internal documents, as well as existing academic and journalistic literature.
